With a Hush
With a hush upon the marsh
the afternoon slid
Into the late, immobile period,
The sun glazing the reeds and coating
the limestone quarry as I, in repose
With the marsh,
bathed in solitude and splendor.
A blue heron, emerging from a clump of cattails,
Flew to the opposite bank and searched
among the rushes
Searching quietly and obliviously,
nibbling and pecking in the mud.
A blaze of summer sin hitting my face
Touched the fen and created
shadowy pools under looming trees.
The stillness encircled the water and,
ascending,
Hung reflected in blue and golden sky.
